The Pacific Coast road trip routes presented on this website are assembled from six interchangeable segments: the Washington coast, Oregon Coast Highway 101, the Northern California redwoods, the San Francisco Bay Area, Big Sur, and the Southern California beaches. Any segment can be driven on its own, combined with its neighbors, or skipped entirely. Route length ranges from a two-day coastal stretch of about 180 miles to a full Seattle-to-San Diego drive of roughly 1,750 miles. Starting cities are Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Modular Pacific Coast Itineraries Built from Six Segments
Segments are combined, reordered, or skipped without rebuilding the whole route.
The route system divides the Pacific Coast corridor into six segments: Washington coast, Oregon Coast Highway 101, Northern California redwoods, San Francisco Bay Area, Big Sur, and Southern California beaches. Any segment can be added, removed, or reordered to match the travel days available. Trip length is determined by how many segments are included rather than by a fixed package duration. The same segment set is used from five starting cities, in both northbound and southbound directions.
Six Interchangeable Segments
Each segment is documented separately with mileage, drive time, towns, and viewpoints. Segments meet at defined boundary points, so any two neighbors can be joined without additional planning work. Removing a segment also removes its mileage and its lodging nights from the itinerary total. Boundary points are Portland, Crescent City, San Francisco, Monterey, and Santa Barbara.
Five Starting Cities
Routes can begin in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego. Changing the starting point reverses or trims the segment sequence without altering the underlying documents. Northbound and southbound versions of every segment are both maintained in the file set. Starting city selection changes only the order in which segments appear.
Trip Length Set by Segment Count
Each segment corresponds to 1 to 4 driving days, so trip length follows directly from the number of segments included. A short trip uses one or two segments; the full corridor uses all six over 14 to 21 days. No part of the itinerary is locked to a package duration or a fixed departure date. Length changes are applied to the segment list before the day-by-day schedule is written.
Overnight Stops Along the Highway
Overnight towns are listed for every segment, all within 15 minutes of the highway. Each entry records lodging capacity, typical nightly rates, and parking notes for vehicles over 20 feet. In populated stretches, stops sit 45 to 90 minutes of driving apart; in the redwood and Big Sur sections the gap reaches 2 hours. The stop list is revised twice a year alongside the segment updates.

About the Route System

The route system was assembled in 2016 by two planners based in Portland, Oregon, after four years of logging distances and overnight options along US-101 and California State Route 1. Segment boundaries follow practical driving days rather than state lines, which keeps each section usable on its own. Every segment carries documented mileage, typical drive times, and a list of towns with lodging capacity. Field checks are run twice a year, in March and September, with the resulting corrections published in the segment documents.

Segment data supplied during the call includes mileage, average drive time, and total elevation change. Coastal fog patterns along the Oregon and Northern California stretches are discussed using monthly averages from 2015 to 2024. Peak-season bookings on the Oregon coast and in the Big Sur area are handled 4 to 6 months ahead, since room counts in those stretches range from 40 to 220 units per town. A nightly confirmation list is issued 14 days before the departure date.
